Election Day: An NYC Marathon Story
I wrote long on the marathon, the election and everything.
Hello. It is Election Day. For New York magazine today, I wrote a very long piece about my New York City Marathon experience and this unique moment in human history. I hope it will be a soothing, even uplifting Election Day read for you.
You can read it right here. I am pleased with how it turned out.
I hope you and yours stay safe and well today—like the marathon itself, there’s no wrong way for you to make it through, as long as you make it through. I may put up a chat post a little later, if those who may want to commiserate, no matter what happens, would like to have a frictionless place to do so.
And once again: Here’s the piece. Thank you for reading it, thank you for reading everything. We’re gonna make it.
What I Learned From Destroying Myself at the New York Marathon, New York.
Congrats! And thanks for passing this on. A nice read this morning. My kid turns 3 on Thursday so I’m trying to focus on that.
The thing I hate most about Trump? The fact that this whole thing is about him making more money for himself. Which tracks.
I'll never forget telling complete strangers at the finish line of a modest 15k in a shocked tone "I did it! I didn't think I could do it, but then I did it!" Just about all of them looked genuinely happy for me and said "YOU DID!" I don't know that I've ever felt that kind of kindness since. Maybe time to get those running shoes back on and eat less of the kids' leftover pizza.
