I was with a group of friends who got stuck in traffic to see the Black Crowes open up for Top Petty. Missed them completely, then Petty ended early because it was an outdoor venue, and there was a ferocious summer thunderstorm that ended the show probably by about 45 minutes. We were all dumb millennials who didn't seem to mind at the time that we missed the Crowes entirely. I'm mad about it in retrospect.
My version of this is seeing Radiohead open for REM right after The Bends came out. I hadn't listened to The Bends yet and thus the entire show was lost on me. I was the jerk who was all "uh, are they gonna play CREEP?" And now the notion of them playing a whole show of The Bends is impossible to imagine.
Ha. The Petty concert was in 05, so the feeling was the Black Crowes had dipped in popularity, but Petty was still headlining big venues. I am pretty open minded about music, and I appreciate the Black Crowes more now. I always blame my friends for making us late, and not factoring in traffic enough!
I just started "How Lucky" and I'm really digging it. Love the references from your world that I've picked up through years of reading your newsletter.
That piece on Bobby Knight was phenomenal. I've never seen the second clip where he nutted up on his own show. Classic!
The man was entertaining, sure, but also a major bully. His comparison on how he dealt with stress to a woman being raped, ("If rape is inevitable, just lay back and enjoy it.") made me sick.
New York magazine has an author page with archives? Yes! I need to check that out. NY magazine is where I discovered your writing.
I've read every post on this substack, time to hit up the NY magazine archives! Thanks!
PS: nice author page picture.....
Any predictions you discover in the archives to be wrong, please ignore!
LOL sure!
Best final scene of one of the best TV shows ever! Thank you Will!
Forever underappreciated. I feel like more people will continue to discover that show for years and years to come ...
Do any of the older folks you know--the ones who engaged and active and glowing--also complain about their health? I wonder if there's a connection.
Less often! I see what you are saying.

Heh, Top Petty.
Well written and very thought provoking, Will.
Better Things - fabulous show!

Woody Hayes I loved. Bobby Knight I did not.
He's the worst. Watching those videos was how I got fired up for the Illini game on Thursday. (Which turned out bad.)
