The funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life came to mind thanks to this newsletter: a friend and I went to see the (now-defunct) Philadelphia Kixx, an indoor soccer team, in the 90s. At halftime there was an all-mascot soccer game, with the usuals (Phillie Phanatic, Swoop, etc.) as well as mascots from local colleges and businesses. One of the mascots was Carlos the Crab, from a long-since-closed seafood restaurant. The mascots are doing their thing, and the Phanatic runs into Carlos. Since Carlos’s costume wasn’t exactly bespoke, his head fell off. All you heard were the gasps of thousands (hundreds?) of area children, and my buddy and I absolutely laughing ourselves into breathlessness. As a crab, Carlos had no thumbs, so repositioning the head was quite difficult. He managed to negotiate that process when the Phanatic, being a brilliant physical comedian, absolutely steamrolled Carlos intentionally, at which point Carlos’s head flew off again, and the childrens’ gasps were completely drowned out by our laughter. I literally fell out of my seat. What a night!
